I am a sucker for vampires but even my non-vampire loving colleagues were impressed with this film. Like the best horror films (think George Romero) this one is a metaphor for one of the horrors of our times, corporate greed.
It’s 2017 and, as in numerous films of recent years, a virus has turned the world upside down, in this case, turning humans into vampires. Society remains the same- complete with our coffee addiction and cookie-cutter lookalike subdivisions- except life is lived at night. The crisis: the vampires are running out of humans despite a corporation that harvests them for blood.
While the film has a few stars: Ethan Hawke; a wickedly funny Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill- most are unknowns. It’s scary, thrilling, very bloody and darkly funny. I can’t wait to sink my teeth in the sequel.
