On the surface, the new romantic comedy "She's Out Of My League" has all the familiar ingredients and characters typical of the plethora of raucous and raunchy sex comedies that have become the popular bread and butter of film directors and producers such as Judd Apatow and the Farrelly Brothers.
Indeed, at first glimpse from the film's advertising trailers... you're left with the intentional and unmistakable message that this film is yet another from the genre where the guys in the film are solely focused on one thing... and one thing alone.
You know what it is... I don't have to spell it out for you.
However, though "She's Out Of My League" most assuredly delivers the requisite gross-out sight gags and situations typical of a so-called sex comedy... believe it or not, this film also has a genuinely sweet and sincere relationship between it's two main love interests at it's core... which thankfully sets it apart from many of the now cookie cutter films being cranked out of this genre... to get a quick opening weekend buck from the primarily young adult audience this "R"-rated comedy targets.
"She's Out Of My League" actually has a bit of heart at it's sometimes raunchy center.
In the film, Kirk ( Jay Baruchel ) is a semi-geeky, skinny guy with low self-esteem issues... who never went to college, works a job he's bored with at airport security and drives a beat-up Neon. His esteem issues aren't helped by the fact that his band of well-meaning best buddies do little to enhance his confidence with their deprecating banter.
Adding to this barrage of self-esteem killers for poor Kirk... his family includes a nutty group of underachieving brothers, one of whom has his pregnant fiance living with the family... and a father who suffers from "tactfulness deficit disorder".
Also, just when you think Kirk's life couldn't get any more lousy... his family has all but adopted his shrewish and demeaning ex-girlfriend who dumped him... where she is invited to live under the same roof and go on family functions with her new boyfriend. The family is basically your worst, inappropriate behavior filled, blue-collar nightmare.
However, just when you think Kirk ( or anyone else, for that matter ) might be justified in jumping off the nearest cliff... fate steps in via the beautiful form of Molly ( a stunning Alice Eve ), a drop dead gorgeous blonde with a law degree and a thriving party planning business.
Molly arrives at Kirk's airport security gate and manages to forget her IPhone while checking through. Molly realizes she's forgotten the phone... and calls it to see if anyone has retrieved it. Fortunately, Kirk answers and arranges with Molly to return it to her at a party she's hosting the next night.
Kirk returns the phone to Molly... and to his surprise, Molly invites him and a friend to a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game the next evening. When Kirk and his friend, Stainer ( T.J. Miller ) show up at the game... Molly and her edgy girlfriend ( Krysten Ritter ) also show up, surprising Kirk. According to Patty, gorgeous Molly is actually interested in "nice guy" Kirk... and the two start seeing each other.
The coupling not only amazes Kirk at his good fortune... but his friends as well. To them, the pairing breaks a cardinal numeric rule of dating as they tell Kirk, "( Molly ) is a hard 10... you're a 5 ! No way a 5 can date a 10 ! "
That's the premise of the remainder of "She's Out Of My League" as Kirk and Molly continue to date... and eventual doubts creep into Kirk's low self-esteem mind, fearing that Molly can't possibly like him for who he is... simply a good guy that's different from the self-absorbed hunks she's been used to dating... which include a egotistical fighter jet pilot who happens to show up on Kirk and Molly's first date together... causing some briefly awkward moments.
Make no mistake, "She's Out Of My League" has it's fair share of raunchy humor mostly at Kirk's unfortunate expense... which includes an embarrassing moment of premature amorous "excitement" only moments before Molly's conservative parents pay an unexpected visit to her apartment.
The audience also gets a hilarious, but thankfully not too graphic primer on Kirk's friends teaching him about "manscaping" south of the border... in anticipation of impressing Molly for their first intimate night together.
However, despite the "R" rated humor, "She's Out Of My League" also has a believable quality of sweetness to it... primarily due to the enjoyable and easy chemistry between the two main characters of Molly and Kirk. You genuinely like them both... and the pairing doesn't come across at all as unbelievable as one might assume, because Kirk is a good at heart guy... not some hound on the prowl for the hot girlfriend to brag about.
Molly is also believable as simply a good looking woman who wants to be with a nice guy... who may not be perfect in every way - but, she's OK with that.
This believability is due in large part to the skills of Baruchel and Eve who make a nice pair that the audience genuinely roots for.
It also helps that the other characters in this film are equally likable, despite a few obnoxious quirks. Miller is a lot of fun to watch as Kirk's somewhat dim-witted friend, Stainer... who also sings lead in a Hall and Oates cover band. Nate Torrence plays Kirk's friend, Devon, the only married and hopelessly romantic one of the friends... who has a penchant for Disney's Princess Jasmine... and also the unfortunate duty to perform the aforementioned delicate manscaping on his good friend.
Mike Vogel rounds out Kirk's friends as Jack, the only cool guy in this very un-cool group... who shares his sage advice to Kirk and group about women... because, well - he's actually had sex with a woman or two. Yeah, Devon, the romantic, probably has had sex as well with his wife... but, not the kind Jack talks about.
Kudos also to Krysten Ritter as Molly's girlfriend with an obnoxious edge. Ritter plays Patty as an "in your face", foul mouthed gal... but, she's a friend you want watching your back.... and she's not immune herself to seeing the good qualities that schlubby Kirk brings to make her best friend happy.
I'd be remiss in not making a shout out in this review to the film's locale and my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. The city has been the setting of numerous films and TV shows from Flashdance... to the recently cancelled TV show, Three Rivers. But, never has the city's real beauty and charm been so completely and beautifully captured as it is in this film.
Whether it's the city's landmark dome-shaped sports arena... or the stunning view of the Pittsburgh's famed downtown "Golden Triangle"... it's a genuine treat to see the film actually utilize many of this great city's numerous unique locales to give them film a new flavor... rather than simply setting the story in the usual locales of New York and Los Angeles.
Believe it or not... there are other cities in the US where people fall in love besides LA and NYC... and "She's Out Of My League" exquisitely highlights the hidden and often overlooked gem that is Pittsburgh.
"She's Out Of My League" is a definite cut above the usual raucous and raunchy romantic comedies. It's a funny and sweetly told "date movie" well worth seeing
.... and the film's final scene is a nice touch to show the relationship between these two seeming opposites, Kirk and Molly - definitely has potential... and room for both characters to believably grow together.
